To provide a treehouse-style activities hub for the Carnegie Club

This project involved designing and constructing a treehouse-style activities hub for The Carnegie Club, an exclusive members club offering the best of Scottish hospitality and grandeur in the scenic Scottish Highlands. Surrounded by magnificent pine trees, the hub was envisioned as a sanctuary where members could relax, recharge, and connect with nature. The design incorporates natural materials and a refined architectural aesthetic, blending seamlessly into the environment while providing modern amenities and comfort.

One of the hub’s stand out features is the Cedar clad exterior with a Cedar shingle roof, which will weather to a beautiful silver grey over time. A wraparound deck surrounds the hub, with a magnificent Caledonian pine tree emerging through one section, creating an inspirational treehouse aesthetic.

The interior of the hub has been designed for flexibility, functionality and comfort. At the heart of the hub is a spacious open-plan area where a large suspended wood-burning stove serves as the centrepiece of the room, providing both warmth and a dramatic focal point. The interior walls and ceiling feature natural wood finishes, echoing the Cedar clad exterior and enhancing the organic feel. The expansive windows ensure plenty of natural light filters through while providing breathtaking views.

Hospitality and grandeur in the scenic Scottish Highlands

The upstairs lounge offers a secluded retreat for relaxation, featuring comfortable seating within a more intimate space.

A practical ‘muddy area’ near the entrance allows members to store and clean muddy boots after outdoor adventures. There are a number of other functional areas including a coffee station, ladies and men’s bathrooms and a changing room.

This treehouse-style activities hub demonstrates how architecture can enhance a connection to nature while meeting the practical needs of its users. Through the thoughtful use of natural materials, sustainable practices, and a sensitive design approach, the hub stands as a testament to the beauty and serenity of the Scottish Highlands. It is both a functional space and a tranquil refuge for the Club’s members.
